Andy Murray has withdrawn from Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Ukraine between 6-8 March because of a virus.

The British number one pulled out of the Dubai Open with the same problem and it has not improved.

"It's obviously disappointing that Andy is unable to play in this Davis Cup tie," GB team captain John Lloyd told the Lawn Tennis Association website.

"But our medical team has been monitoring Andy closely and don't feel that he is in a position to compete."

The tie against the Ukrainians is in the Europe/Africa Zone second round and will take place in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Murray said: "Following his withdrawal from the Dubai Open, Andy's condition hasn't improved.

"After daily visits from the LTA doctor and a number of medical tests, Andy has been told to rest for at least seven days to overcome his virus.

"Andy is greatly disappointed that he has to pull out of the upcoming Davis Cup tie as he was looking forward to playing for Great Britain in front of his home crowd.

"Andy will be right behind John Lloyd and the team when they compete against Ukraine this Friday."

Josh Goodall and Chris Eaton secured their places in the team through a play-off system and are available to Lloyd, along with doubles specialist Ross Hutchins.

James Ward and Colin Fleming were taken to Glasgow as cover for Murray and Lloyd will now decide on how he will set his team up for the tie.

"We have five players up here who are desperate to play and they have all impressed me in the last week," said Lloyd.

"The play-offs demonstrated that these guys can handle long matches mentally and physically so Paul Annacone and I will discuss who will replace Andy in the team and make a decision in the next couple of days."
