Zabaleta 'deserves Argentina nod'

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes says Pablo Zabaleta's form is good enough to earn him a call-up for Argentina.

Zabaleta, 24, who was part of the Argentine gold medal-winning Olympic squad in 2008, has played at right-back and in midfield for City.

But he missed out on an international spot last week and Hughes told the club website: "He is still a young player.

"His time will come because he is doing fabulously well. I think Argentina coach Diego Maradona is aware of him."

Zabaleta, who arrived at Eastlands from Espanyol in August 2008, has been one of the most consistent performers for City, who have made the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup, where they will meet Hamburg.

Argentina legend Maradona did not arrange to see Zabaleta while visiting the UK in November 2008 - when he called in at Manchester United and Liverpool after taking charge of his national side.

"Maradona has been about 300 yards from our training ground, so he only needed to pop in," added Hughes.

"As managers we stand or fall by our decisions and so will he."

Argentina thrashed Venezuela 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier at the weekend to strengthen their claim for a place at the 2010 finals in South Africa.
