Fourth seed Vera Zvonareva fought her way the biggest win of her career with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 defeat of Ana Ivanovic in the Indian Wells tournament final.
Both players had to contest with strong winds which at times gave the match an almost farcical edge.
The Russian's decision to stay deep on the baseline proved well-judged as she sneaked through a first set tie-break.
After a break in the first game of the second, Ivanovic's confidence ebbed away as Zvonareva finished strongly.
