Lance Armstrong will make his comeback from his collarbone injury in the Tour de Gila in New Mexico on 29 April.
The race, which runs over five days, will give the American the chance to find some form ahead of the Giro d'Italia, which begins on 9 May.
Armstrong, who broke his collarbone in a crash in Spain last month, has been on a 10-day training programme.
The Astana team rider will race on an individual basis due to International Cycling Union (UCI) regulations.
Astana team spokesman Philippe Maertens told AFP: "Lance is currently flying back to Colorado but will head out to New Mexico straight after.
"The decision to race at the Tour de Gila was made only this morning."
