Bates coy on Wilkinson comeback

Jonny Wilkinson
Wilkinson has been out with a knee injury since September last year

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates remained coy on the prospect of a return for fly-half Jonny Wilkinson following Sunday's 12-6 loss at Wasps.

Wilkinson is reported to be in line for a first-team comeback after a long-term knee injury but Bates gave little clue as to an exact date.

"We'll have to see how it goes this week," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"[Wilkinson was] closer this week, we'll just have to see how he reacts to training during the next week."

Wilkinson has been out of action since injuring the knee in the 39-23 defeat by Gloucester in September 2008.

Meanwhile Bates was disappointed to come away from Sunday's defeat with just a bonus point after a spirited second-half display.

"I'm disappointed we didn't win, we had a couple of opportunities and the boys were pretty sure we scored over in the corner," he said.

"They had plenty of energy in the tank in the first half while we looked sluggish after travelling.

"But in the second we came back at them really well."
