Cayless said the World Cup final win over Australia was his career highlight

World Cup-winning New Zealand captain Nathan Cayless has retired from international rugby league.

The 31-year-old led the Kiwis to the shock 34-20 World Cup final triumph over Australia in 2008.

"Nothing can compare with that, it was a huge honour to be able to lead the first New Zealand team to win the World Cup," said Cayless

"I've had a great time playing for the Kiwis over the last 10 years but I decided it was time to move on."

Cayless played 38 Tests for the Kiwis, making his international debut in against Australia in Brisbane in 1998.
