The opening round of the 2009 MotoGP championship in Qatar had to be cancelled on Sunday night after torrential rain.
Earlier in the day the 125cc and 250cc races had been shortened by the weather but the rain returned with a vengeance as the riders lined up on the grid.
Race organisers are considering the possibility of postponing the race until Monday.
Casey Stoner had been due to start on pole position ahead of Valentino Rossi.
