Darlington manager Dave Penney has resigned ahead of his expected appointment as the new boss of League One side Oldham Athletic.

Penney joined the Quakers in 2006 after five years in charge of Doncaster Rovers, who he guided from the Conference to League One.

He is now set to be named Oldham boss after Joe Royle announced he will leave Boundary Park at the end of the season.

Oldham have called a press conference for 1500 BST on Wednesday.

Penney's Darlington have faced an uncertain future since the club went into administration and had 10 points deducted in February.

The Quakers were in contention for a promotion place this season before having their points taken away.

Royle took temporary charge of the Latics after John Sheridan left the club in March.
