Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin completed his first round at the Spanish Open on Thursday just days helping an elderly neighbour escape from a fatal blaze.
The former Ryder Cup player carried the woman to safety when fire struck his apartment block in Stockholm.
But he was unable to rescue the woman's husband, Swedish newspapers reported.
"My family and I could have lost our lives so I am still in shock," said the 41-year-old after shooting a six-under par opening round of 66 in Girona.
"I would prefer not to talk about it at the moment.
"It's hard but I'm trying to block things off so I can play golf."
