Takeover interest for Southampton

Administrators for the Southampton FC parent company say they have received more than 17 enquiries from parties interested in taking over the club.

Shares in Southampton Leisure Holdings were suspended last week with high profile resignations following.

Mark Fry, from administrators Begbies Traynor, told the BBC in excess of 17 inquiries had been made, including interest from supporters' groups.

But he said many of them were unlikely to be "serious".

The team lost 3-2 at home against Championship relegation rivals Charlton on Saturday leaving them three points adrift of safety.

'Raise funds'

Mr Fry said: "We had a crowd of just over 27,000 which is a significant improvement on recent gates.

"It makes a substantial benefit to the revenue so it will be excellent to see that continue for the next few home games.

"We have a substantial number of inquiries which we are following up.

"Clearly there are a number which are not going to be serious.

"But we are very hopeful there are a number of bids, or interested parties, who are serious about taking over the club.

"I know there are supporters groups which have shown an interest.

"But they have a long way to go to be able to raise the sufficient funds."

Southampton plc chairman Rupert Lowe and football club chairman Michael Wilde both resigned last week.
