Danny Cipriani kicked all 12 points for Wasps as they beat Newcastle.

The fly-half landed three penalties and a drop goal in the first half to shock a Falcons side, who had won seven of their previous eight Premiership games.

Newcastle rallied and Tom May atoned for missing a first-half penalty by scoring one in the 59th minute.

He scored another oe seven minutes later and Wasps' Charlie Beech then escaped a yellow card for a body-check, but the hosts hung on for victory.

Josh Lewsey played a crucial role in his side's win on the day he announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The former England player started in the centre but moved to the wing after an injury to Tom Voyce and was always prepared to run the ball.

Cipriani, still waiting to find out if he will be selected for this summer's Lions tour, opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Newcastle had been caught offside in front of their own posts.

He landed his second penalty in the 22nd minute and missed another effort five minutes later but made up for that within a minute with his drop goal.

Wasps came close to two tries from Tom Rees and Mickey Young but each time they conceded possession at the vital moment.

But Cipriani extended the lead before the break after Adam Balding conceded a penalty for holding on to the ball too long.

May hauled Newcastle back into the game after the break and almost scored a late try but knocked the ball on at the crucial moment.
