Boks suffer Jantjes injury blow

South Africa full-back Conrad Jantjes will not feature for the Springboks against the British and Irish Lions after breaking his leg on Saturday.

The Western Stormers back collided with Waikato's Liam Messam in the opening minutes of their Super 14 match.

The 29-year-old Jantjes has appeared 24 times for his country and can operate across the back three.

The Lions take on Western Province on 13 June before the first Test against the Springboks on 20 June.

Jantjes was in the starting line-up for South Africa's autumn victories over Wales, Scotland and England and shared the number 15 duties with Percy Montgomery during last year's Tri-Nations.

606: DEBATE

Bath's South African fly-half Butch James is already out of the summer's action after tearing his cruciate knee ligament against Newcastle.

There were more concerns for Springboks coach Peter de Villiers from the Stormers 28-14 defeat as Jantjes' provincial team-mate Schalk Burger, a key part of his back-row, limped off.

The flanker will have a scan on Monday to assess the extent of a calf injury.

The Lions depart on 24 May for their 10-match tour in South Africa and play Test matches in Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg.
