Coyle close to Burnley extension

Owen Coyle
Coyle took Burnley to England's top flight for the first time in 33 years

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby has revealed manager Owen Coyle is on the verge of agreeing a two-year contract extension at Turf Moor.

Speculation has been rife that the 42-year-old, who has overseen the club's rise to the Premier League, was ready to replace Gordon Strachan at Celtic.

"We're very deep in negotiations for an extension to his contract," Kilby told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"Owen's our manager and he's happy the way that is."

Coyle arrived at Burnley in November 2007 after a successful spell in charge of St Johnstone.

After helping the Clarets avoid relegation in his first season at Turf Moor, the former Republic of Ireland international earned plaudits during the 2008-09 campaign after guiding them to within minutes of securing a Carling Cup final place.

But despite being regarded as favourite to replace Strachan at Parkhead, the Paisley-born manager has declared his intention to remain with the promotion-winning side.

"We've had no communication at all from Celtic. It's the Glasgow press, in particular, who have been stoking this up but it's very unwelcome and we don't need it," Kilby said.

"We had a meeting this morning to discuss budgets with Owen. He's very happy here at Burnley and I hope he will be here for many more years to come.

"I had one guy come up to me and saying he met with Celtic on Monday night and I thought he'd done well to do that considering I was with him all night in London.

"It's just the silly things people get up to and both of us have been a little annoyed with all this speculation."
