Elena Dementieva booked her place in the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Grand Prix with a hard-fought 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory over France's Marion Bartoli.
The second seeded Russian raced through the first set in 30 minutes but was pegged back by a determined Bartoli.
However, Dementieva broke in the first game of the decider and opened up a 4-0 lead before easing into the last four.
"It was my best match of the tournament so far, I feel like I am playing much better," said the world number three.
Dementieva will face either third-seed Jelena Jankovic or Italy's Flavia Pennetta, who play later on Friday.
In the other quarter-finals, fifth-seed Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova faces Argentina's Gisela Dulko, while world number one Dinara Safina plays Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska.
