England's Brian Davis shot a closing 64 to finish second behind Rory Sabbatini in the PGA Tour's Byron Nelson Championship in Texas.

Davis, fifth in his two previous starts in the US, trailed Sabbatini by two strokes after the South African, the joint overnight leader, also shot 64.

Sabbatini ended 19 under for his fifth victory, while the in-form Davis notched a third second place in the US.

American DA Points was third on 16 under after a 65.

Former Spanish Open champion Davis was joint leader after four birdies in five holes from the seventh, but Sabbatini moved clear again and kept his nerve when Davis put the pressure on again with a 26-foot eagle putt on the long 16th.

Despite a bogey on the final hole after a run of three birdies in a row, Sabbatini finished on a 72-hole tournament record of 19-under par 261.

"I was just trying to play it smart," Sabbatini said. "I hit a good first putt but it didn't go down."

It was Sabbatini's first triumph since the 2007 Colonial in nearby Fort Worth and linked with golf legend Ben Hogan the same way Nelson is at this event.

"It's a great feeling to win anything associated with 'Lord' Byron," said Sabbatini. "To always be linked to two of the greatest names in golf, that's pretty amazing. That's something I can always cherish.

"We are going to be partying tonight."

The 34-year-old Davis, who won the US Tour qualifying school in 2004, said: "I can't do any more than that. I had a shaky start. I was able to give it a good push but Rory was doing really well."

Davis will skip Monday's nearby Open qualifier to play in a pro-am event at Colonial, living up to the promise he made when Colonial organisers gave him an early guaranteed entry.

Co-overnight leader John Mallinger of America dropped back into sixth place after a 70, while England's Greg Owen ended tied 35th on six under and Scotland's Martin Laird was tied 39th on five under.
