Serbian Jankovic, who is targeting her third consecutive title in Rome, had looked impressive before her opponent pulled out and was leading 6-1 1-0.
World number one Dinara Safina meets 14th seed Zheng Jie later on Wednesday.
And American fourth seed Venus Williams takes on Safina's Russian compatriot Anna Chakvetadze.
