Jelena Jankovic
Jankovic's consistency helped her see off Cetkovska and make progress

Former world number one Jelena Jankovic marched into the second round of the French Open with a rain-interrupted 6-2 6-3 victory over Petra Cetkovska.

The Serbian fifth seed was quickly into her stride and, despite a two-hour rain break, ran away with the first set.

Cetkovska was by no means outclassed but made too many errors in the second set as Jankovic wrapped up her victory.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the seventh seed, also made progress after beating French wildcard Claire Feuerstein 6-1 6-4.

Second seed Serena Williams, the 2002 champion, is in action later on Tuesday against Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic.

And the 2004 finalist, Russia's Elena Dementieva, begins her campaign against Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa.

Jankovic was first on court on a blustery day in Paris and had to put up with the worst that the elements could throw at her.

But she was well in control of the first set at 4-1 up when play was stopped and, when play resumed, quickly racked up four straight games to take it and assume control of the second set too.

Cetkovska kept her hopes alive by immediately breaking back but she was unable to capitalise when Jankovic's serve wobbled again at the end of the match and was eventually well beaten.

Svetlana Kuznetsova
Kuznetsova's powerplay proved far too strong for Feuerstein

Jankovic, 24, who ended 2008 as the top ranked player on the women's tour is still to win her first Grand Slam singles title but reached the last semi-finals in 2007 and 2008.

She will face Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia or Kristina Mladenovic in the second round.

Kuznetsova will play Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan or India's Sania Mirza next after easily seeing off Feuerstein.

The Russian, a semi-finalist here in 2008 and the runner-up in 2006, was 5-1 up in the first set when the rain came but only needed another 35 minutes to complete her progress.
