Juventus have signed Brazil playmaker Diego from Werder Bremen for £21m.

The 24-year-old, who had been linked to numerous Premier League clubs including Manchester City and Chelsea, has signed a five-year deal with the Italian side.

Diego started at Brazilian side Santos before moving to Portuguese team Porto and then on to German outfit Werder, where he scored 38 goals in 84 games.

"It is the right time to take this step and I'm convinced I will achieve great results at Juventus," he said.

The attacking midfielder played alongside Manchester City striker and Brazilian team-mate Robinho at Santos before moving to Porto in 2004 as a replacement for the Barcelona-bound Deco.

Diego scored only four goals in two unsettled seasons in Portugal and left for Werder in the Bundesliga.

He helped them reach the last Uefa Cup final this season, with the competition becoming the Europa League, but missed the 2-1 defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul because he was suspended.

Diego's last match for Werder will be in the German Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, 30 May.

He will replace Czech international Pavel Nedved, who is retiring at the end of the season, in Turin.

Serie A giants Juve are in the process of rebuilding having been relegated to Serie B in 2006 due to their role in a match-fixing scandal.

And a spokesman said: "Due to his technical characteristics Diego is a fundamental part of the rebuilding of our team.

"We've always said that we want to build a team of young players and talented ones and Diego exudes both qualities.

"Despite his age he's a player of great experience with having already played at the highest level for seven years."
