Jorge Lorenzo
Lorenzo was second in today's final practice

Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo secured pole for the Spanish MotoGP in Jerez with a qualifying time of one minute 38.933 seconds.

The ride brought him in ahead of fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, while Australian Casey Stoner occupies third on the grid for Sunday's race.

Six-time world champion Valentino Rossi is on fourth for the Fiat Yamaha team.

Britain's James Toseland is back on 14th after recording a lap time of one minute 40.670 seconds.

Lorenzo holds a one-point lead over Rossi in the overall standings after a win in the previous round in Japan.

606: DEBATE

After prospering in the appalling conditions of Motegi, he came out on top in an entertaining tussle with Pedrosa played out in on a sun-drenched circuit.

Lorenzo posted his best time on the 18th of his 21 attempts and edged ahead of his rival to repeat his pole from last year's race.

It has been a disappointing weekend so far for Rossi and, after finishing seventh-fastest in this morning's final practice session, he slipped off the front row of the grid for the first time this season.

France's Randy de Puniet took fifth for the LCR Honda team with Italy's Loris Capirossi on sixth.
