Murray has made big strides on clay this season

Britain's Andy Murray reached the fourth round of the French Open for the first time when Janko Tipsarevic retired after two sets on Friday.

Third seed Murray saved two set points in the opening set and led 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 when the Serb called it a day.

Murray came back from 5-2 down to take the opening set and dominated after Tipsarevic picked up a hip injury.

The Scot will next face 13th seed Marin Cilic after the Croat beat 18th seed Radek Stepanek 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.

Murray went into Friday's third-round match with a 2-2 record against Tipsarevic, but the Serb has slipped from 33 to 65 in the rankings over the last year, while Murray has become part of the game's elite.

It was Tipsarevic, 24, who took the initiative with some powerful hitting as Murray struggled with unforced errors in the early stages.

The unseeded player broke twice in succession to move 5-2 clear but twice failed to serve out, missing two set points in game 10, and after breaking again in game 11 Tipsarevic missed a third chance to clinch the set.

It came down to a tie-break and Murray dominated, reaching the changeover at 4-2 and sealing it with a cross-court backhand winner.

When Murray broke at the start of the second with a couple of huge forehand winners, and Tipsarevic then called for the trainer to receive treatment on his left thigh, a regulation victory looked realistic for the Scot.

In a match that lacked any real rhythm the world number three immediately handed the break back, but he moved ahead again with a love-service game and a fifth break of the Tipsarevic serve followed to give the Briton a 3-2 lead.

The increasingly forlorn Serb now called for the doctor and swallowed some pills at the changeover but was unable to threaten as Murray, still not at his very best, did enough to wrap up the second set.

That proved enough for Tipsarevic, who approached the net and shook Murray's hand after one hour and 51 minutes.
