Sixth seed Andy Roddick reached round four of the French Open for the first time with an impressive 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory over Marc Gicquel of France.

The former world number one took two of two break points and saved three on his serve before winning the first set.

Roddick's big serving and much-improved shot selection and movement saw him to victory with a single break in both the second and third sets.

Next up for the 26-year-old American is either Gael Monfils or Jurgen Melzer.

Tommy Haas also reached the fourth round, for only the second time in nine attempts at Roland Garros, after seeing off Jeremy Chardy 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-4.

Former world number two Haas broke Chardy's serve at 5-5 before serving out the first set and a single break was again enough to secure the second.

The German lost the third set but reeled off 12 of 13 points from 3-1 down in the fourth to book a meeting with Roger Federer or Paul-Henri Mathieu.

World number two Federer, fourth seed Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro, seeded five, all play later on Saturday.
