Rossi secures Spanish GP triumph

Valentino Rossi
Rossi was never threatened once he took the lead

Valentino Rossi moved top of the MotoGP world championship table after taking his first win of the season in Spain.

The reigning world champion came home ahead of home favourite Dani Pedrosa, with Casey Stoner in third place.

Pedrosa, who missed much of pre-season due to injury, led for 17 laps but once passed by Rossi, he looked physically spent and never threatened a comeback.

Jorge Lorenzo, who had come into the race as championship leader, crashed out from fourth place near the end.

"This feels more like a victory than Qatar did - it's a very hard track for us," said a delighted Stoner afterwards.

"This was the best the bike had been all weekend but it still just wasn't quite enough but we're stoked with third place.

"When Jorge was threatening to catch I thought this is it, I'm off the podium - almost every lap I was losing the front at least once and I was about to give up when he went, so everything went our way today."
