Safina beat British number one Anne Keothavong in the first round

World number one Dinara Safina eased to a 6-1 6-1 victory over fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko to book her place in the third round of the French Open.

Top seed Safina raced into a 5-0 first set lead to steamroller her 153rd-ranked opponent into submission.

The second set was a similar affair, as 18-year-old Diatchenko was overpowered by the powerful Safina.

Safina will next face either compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded 27th, or France's Julie Coin.

After whitewashing British number one Anne Keothavong in the first round, 2008 French Open runner-up Safina extended her winning streak to 17 matches with this straightforward victory.

ace-you

The only resistance offered by qualifier Diatchenko came at the end of the first set, winning a game on her own serve, and the beginning of the second when she was able to break Safina.

These were merely minor blips though for the dominant Safina, who sealed the win with a forehand winner after only 55 minutes of play.
