Martinez to meet Swansea chairman

Swans boss Roberto Martinez has been linked with several managerial jobs

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez is to meet chairman Huw Jenkins on Thursday morning to discuss his future, BBC Wales understands.

The Spaniard is now back in the UK from a break in his homeland.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has made 35-year-old Martinez his first-choice replacement for Steve Bruce, who has become boss of Sunderland.

But Jenkins has refused permission for Wigan to speak to Martinez as they are "miles apart" in terms of compensation.

Celtic are also in the hunt for Martinez and their efforts to hold talks have also been blocked, with Swansea demanding in excess of £2m.

Someone hoping that Martinez stays in south Wales is Swansea's first summer signing Stephen Dobbie.

Striker Dobbie, 26, arrived in May on a free transfer from Scottish First Division side Queen of the South, where he was top scorer with 24 goals.

"I would be disappointed [if he left]," Dobbie told BBC Wales.

"The way he spoke about how he wanted the team to to play and how I fit in... the way he wanted the whole club to move forward... was very encouraging.

"That's just football for you. Obviously, I would love him to stay as he brought me in to improve the team.

"But he has got to improve himself and if a move comes along that's right for him, you can't really stand in his way.

"He has got his own career and I've got mine and if he moves I've just got to get my head down and work hard for the next manager if that happens."

Martinez has earned rave reviews for his handling of Swansea in his first two years in the role.

Promotion from League One as champions was followed last season by a highly creditable eighth-place finish in their first year back at Championship level.

That success has been achieved through an exciting brand of attacking, skilful football that has resulted in the Spaniard also being linked to managerial jobs at the likes of Real Sociedad and Reading.

Martinez has so far refused to talk about his future and denied quotes attributed to him in newspapers north of the border earlier this week that he is interested in joining Celtic.

"The quotes are false," he told BBC Wales. "I didn't speak with anyone. The only person who can speak about the situation is my chairman."

Wigan now seem to be the frontrunners in the battle for Martinez after Whelan named his close friend as his number one choice.

Swans chairman Jenkins said on Monday: "Ultimately it always comes down to the individual himself about how he feels and what he wants to do with the next step of his career.

"Roberto has got to consider his future and where his commitment lies. We will see how things go the rest of the week."
