Phil Mickelson will play in the US Open later this month despite his wife's battle with cancer.

Mickelson, 38, announced in May that he was taking a break from golf to support his wife Amy.

But the world number two will compete at Bethpage from 18-21 June as he seeks a fourth major victory.

The timing of the tournament is understood to fit in with the treatment his 37-year-old wife is undergoing for breast cancer.

Mickelson recently told his personal website: "We have a wonderful team of doctors helping us and it is believed that we caught this early.

"We are anxiously waiting for a number of test results that will help guide us in the best possible direction."

The Mickelsons married in 1996 and have three children.

Mickelson has twice won the US Masters and also has a USPGA title to his credit. The left hander, who has missed the last two tour events, finished tied fourth in this year's Masters.
