Springboks to contest Botha ban

South Africa second row Bakkies Botha
Botha will still be available for South Africa's Tri-nations campaign

South Africa have said they will appeal against Bakkies Botha's two-week ban for dangerous charging.

Botha was suspended for a challenge on Adam Jones which left the British and Irish Lions prop with a dislocated shoulder in the 28-25 second Test win.

But the Springboks claim the lock was legally clearing out the ruck.

Assistant coach Dick Muir said: "If it wasn't for the injury which came from it, I don't think anything would have been said about it."

The 29-year-old will miss the third and final Test match in Johannesburg, along with team-mate Schalk Burger, who was handed an eight-week ban for eye-gouging Lions winger Luke Fitzgerald.

South Africa's lawyers received a copy of the hearing report on Tuesday and are hopeful an appeal can be scheduled before Saturday.

But the Springboks confirmed they will not be appealing against Burger's suspension.

Unlike Burger, Botha will be available for the world champions' Tri-Nations campaign, which begins against New Zealand in Bloemfontein on 25 July.

Jones, along with injured Lions team-mate Brian O'Driscoll, will fly home from the tour on Wednesday.
