Yakubu is hoping for better luck in his third season at Goodison Park

Everton striker Yakubu says he should be back from injury in time for the start of the new season in August.

The Nigeria international has been out since November with a torn Achilles tendon he suffered against Tottenham.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I've started running and I'm kicking a ball but I don't want to take any chances and come back too soon.

"I'll just take my time and I think I'll be back for the beginning of next season, which is good."

"I can't wait [to get back playing] and I'm working so hard and its been frustrating but there is nothing much you can do," added the 26-year-old. "For me, I'm fine and I just keep training and hopefully I'll be back."

It would be a really good feeling for me to be back in training, playing in Europe and the league

Everton have missed Yakubu's presence this season, as he was the club's top scorer in his first season with 21 goals.

But now he is nearing his comeback, the striker is eyeing the prospect of Europa League action.

"For me, I really want to play European football. As players we really want to play in Europe and its an opportunity for us," he said.

"We have to work so hard. It would be a really good feeling for me to be back in training, playing in Europe and the league."
