Benitez and Bowyer will play key roles in Birmingham's campaign next season
|
Birmingham are hoping to tie up the signings of striker Christian Benitez and midfielder Lee Bowyer by the end of the week, BBC Sport understands.
A fee rising to £9m for Ecuadorian Benitez was agreed with Mexican side Santos Laguna early in June.
And while the deal has taken "a little longer" than expected, according to a club spokesman, it should be done soon.
Bowyer, 32, is set to arrive on a free transfer from West Ham after enjoying a loan spell with Blues last season.
Birmingham's players return to training this week after the summer break and it is believed that Benitez and Bowyer are very close to agreeing to join them.
Former England international midfielder Bowyer played a key role in helping Blues gain promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

His willingness to accept a cut in wages is also believed to have aided the process.
Benitez was set to join Blues in June before his medical indicated a knee problem.
Blues were keen to renegotiate the terms of the deal, with a cut in the fee and a potential release clause thought to be included in their new proposal.
And it appears that Santos Laguna are receptive to the idea, which will allow Benitez, currently recovering after shoulder surgery, to sign a three-year deal.
