Ex-WBO champ Ibragimov quits ring

Former world heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov has retired, 17 months after losing his title in a one-sided defeat by Wladimir Klitschko.

The Russian, 34, won the WBO belt in June 2007 by beating Shannon Briggs, and he overcame Evander Holyfield in his first defence.

A talented amateur, Ibragimov lost to Cuban great Felix Savon in the Sydney Olympics heavyweight final in 2000.

He turned pro in 2002 and had a record of 22-1-1 (17 of his wins by knockout).

He lost to Klitschko in February 2008, and his promoter Leon Margules said: "I always believed he was never going to fight again because he had enough money and he didn't seem to have his heart in it."

Ibragimov's contest against Klitschko at Madison Square Garden was the first unification bout in the heavyweight division for nearly nine years.

Their lacklustre fight ended in a lopsided unanimous decision and was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd.

Ibragimov was one of only five southpaw heavyweight champions in history, the others being Michael Moorer, Corrie Sanders, Chris Byrd and Ruslan Chagaev.
