Warrington captain Adrian Morley hailed their 25-16 Challenge Cup final victory over Huddersfield as the highlight of his hugely successful career.

The Great Britain prop, a Cup winner with Leeds 10 years ago, helped Wolves end a 35-year wait to win the Cup.

"I was lucky enough to win with Leeds in 1999 but to lead the boys and lift the Cup is the highlight of my career without a doubt," he told BBC Sport.

"For a rugby league-mad town such as Warrington it means everything."

Warrington lost both their Super League matches in the run-up to the final, but raised their game against the Giants, who sit fourth in the table after a superb season.

"We hit form when it matters in the Cup," Morley added.

"(Coach) Tony Smith is about performance rather than results - if everyone plays well results will look after themselves."

Wolves were outstanding - Smith

Smith, whose Leeds team lost the 2005 Cup final to Hull, hailed his team's "fantastic" effort.

The Challenge Cup was the only trophy to have eluded the Australian-born coach during his successful spell as Leeds boss.

"It's the first time I have touched it," he said. "It's something special. The cup has got something else about it.

"On each occasion and each game in the cup we've lifted and put in a really good performance. It makes it a bit more special as not everybody has the chance to do it and you've got to work pretty hard for it and it's pretty special.

"We were outstanding in defence, swarming all over a very good team.

"Our form has been pretty average for the last couple of weeks - sometimes you need a kick up the backside. We've come out and performed on the day, that's the beauty of the Cup."

Half-back Lee Briers, who rounded off the victory with a late drop-goal, singled out man-of-the-match Michael Monaghan for particular praise.

"All credit to Michael, he's had his knockers and he's just won the Lance Todd trophy - how good is that?" he said.

"It's unbelievable - we're going to be remembered for the rest of our lives in Warrington."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown

Monaghan became only the third Australian to win the Lance Todd Trophy in the competition's illustrious history and the 29-year-old said: "It is a massive honour and it means an awful lot to me.

"Of course I knew the cup was big but I didn't realise just how big until we got out there and saw the crowd.

"To win at a place like this, and get chosen as man-of-the-match, pretty much makes it the best day of my career.

"To be honest I think today is about the fans more than the players and they deserve it."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown, a former playing colleague of Smith's in Australia, believed his side failed to handle the occasion.

"We had a lot of people below their best, especially in some really key positions," he said.

"At times our attack didn't work for each other like they generally do, and even in defence, we had a sloppy start which is quite unusual for us.

"Full credit to Warrington, they played better than us.

"We had a few people who didn't handle the occasion very well. Big occasions can do funny things and it certainly got the better of us but we've got to kick on now in the league.

"There are going to be some disappointed people, but we've got to learn from it. The Super League is still there to be won."

Brown extended a special mention to Briers, who controlled the tempo of the match for Warrington.

"I've watched Lee Briers play a lot of football over his career and I've been quite critical of him," Brown added. "I think he's wasted a lot of years of football because he's a very talented player but I take my hat off to him, he's turned his career around.

"I have to give him credit. I wish I didn't have to, but I've got to."
