Stoke manager Tony Pulis has added Uruguayan midfielder Diego Arismendi to his squad after agreeing a fee of £2.6m with Club Nacional for the 21-year-old.

The deal could see the Uruguayan champions receive a total of about £4.8m for the anchorman.

"It's a dream come true to play in the Premier League," Arismendi told the Stoke website.

He has won two caps for his national side having made his debut in a friendly against Norway in May 2008.

"This is the first time that the club have signed a player directly from South America," said chief executive Tony Scholes.

"Clearly Diego will need time to settle but we are excited by his potential and are confident he will prove to be a great acquisition."

Arismendi follows Middlesbrough duo Robert Huth and Tuncay to the Britannia Stadium in a busy final week of the transfer window for the Potters.

Midfielder Dean Whitehead, who signed from Sunderland in July for £3m, is the only other arrival of the summer.

Although Whitehead's former team-mate defender Danny Collins has held talks over a possible switch from the Stadium of Light.
