Dementieva beaten in Tokyo opener

Dementieva fell away dramatically in the final set against Bondarenko

Third seed Elena Dementieva became the latest big name to fall at the Pan Pacific Open as she lost to Kateryna Bondarenko in her opening match.

The Russian's game disintegrated in the final set as she went down 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 in Tokyo.

Top seeds Dinara Safina and Venus Williams, along with fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, lost on day one.

Tournament organisers will hope that Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic win later on Tuesday.

Denmark's Wozniacki, who finished runner-up at the US Open earlier this month, is now the highest seed left in the draw at number four.

There was more trouble for leading names as sixth seed Vera Zvonareva lost 3-6 6-4 6-2 to fellow Russian Alisa Kleybanova, and 13th seed Nadia Petrova went down 6-2 6-2 to Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia.

But eighth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus thrashed China's Jie Zheng 6-1 6-1, and 14th seed Marion Bartoli beat fellow Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 6-4 6-2.
