No matter where you live there are some basic steps that you should follow when you plan on getting a hunting license. Following these steps, having applications and information ready ahead of time and doing a little bit of planning can make the process of applying for and getting a turkey hunting license a lot easier and less stressful.
The first step in getting your turkey hunting license is to pick what season you want to hunt in, fall or spring, and what area you want to hunt in. It's best to stay within your state of residency but not necessary. Even within the state you live in you will need to do some research and find out where the best hunting is.
Once you know where you want to hunt you will also need to identify what type of wild game you want to hunt. If you want to hunt just wild turkey then you will need a permit to hunt turkey. If you want to hunt turkey and other game you will need a separate permit for each type of game you want to hunt in addition to the actual hunting license.
Find out what the residency requirements are and if you fit them. If you are getting a license to hunt in your home state then you will probably meet all the residency requirements. If you are hunting in a state that you don't live in you might need to purchase a different type of license, usually more expensive but not always. Many states limit the number of non residents allowed to hunt in that state so get your application in early to make sure you can get one of the designated non resident licenses.
Find out what the regulations are for your state or the state you are applying for a hunting license in and fill out the applications. Gather any supporting documentation you need and keep all the forms and papers together. Make copies of everything.
When you fill out the hunting license application be sure to find out if your state required HIP certification. If so, you need to get HIP certification at the same time that you get the hunting license.
When you have received your hunting license and your permit to hunt turkeys and whatever other wild game you want to hunt make sure that you make copies of all your documents. Place copies of all your licenses and permits in your vehicle's glove box, in your hunting bag, and make sure to carry a copy with you at all times when you are out hunting.
