How to Help a Friend Conquer His Fear of Flying

You cannot simply help it. One of these days, you might be in need of traveling with a friend who, surprisingly, might have a fear of flying, or aviophobia. If you happen to be on a trip with a friend who needs your help and support, it is certainly important that you know what to do.

Your friend might not really be confident in admitting to you that he is suffering from such a fear so it is important to know the signs that he might be giving off. For example, if your friend frequently asks you how long the flight would take before you get to your choice destination, then that is one sign that he might not be very comfortable with flying for very long hours. Another thing is to ask your friend if it is his first time to ride an airplane.

If on the other hand, your friend openly admits that he has a fear of flying, then chances are, you no longer have to guess that situation. As a friend, it would be ideal for you to ask where your friend might be comfortably seated and remind him to just relax and enjoy the ride.

For aviophobics, the most crucial parts of flying are the take off and the landing because these are the two instances wherein you feel a sudden motion that can sometimes be scary. You can simply remind your friend to close his eyes and talk to you during the landing and the take off to divert his attention. If this does not work, there are several over the counter medicines that can help your friend feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the whole trip.

Avoid stressing your friend by telling him stories that might possibly scare him. Instead, make sure that your friend understands that flying isn’t something scary. In fact, it is something that’s really fun and enjoyable.
