O'Connor came off the bench to claim victory for Birmingham

Substitute Garry O'Connor's header earned Birmingham victory at Hull.

O'Connor struck in the 75th minute, heading Keith Fahey's corner past Hull keeper Boaz Myhill who had frustrated Birmingham with some excellent saves.

Twice in the first half he was forced into fingertip saves from Lee Bowyer and Christian Benitez, while he also denied Bowyer from point-blank range.

Late on Seyi Olofinjana headed against the crossbar for Hull, with Birmingham clearing his follow-up off the line.

Hull's fourth league defeat of the season and their second loss at the KC Stadium leaves Phil Brown's side marooned in the bottom three, with Birmingham in a comfortable mid-table position.

Stephen Carr was booked as early as the third minute for Birmingham after diving in on Stephen Hunt with the ball long gone.

Hunt sent in the free-kick with Joe Hart forced to save with his legs from Kamil Zayate's close-range effort.

Several moments later Hunt was again involved, this time powering a swerving 30-yard drive towards goal, with Hart palming the ball away to safety.

Set-piece mistake costly - Brown

But Hull failed to sustain their bright start, allowing Birmingham back into the game by conceding possession far too easily.

Benitez caused the Hull defence problems with his pace and power and it was the Ecuadorian who had Birmingham's first chance.

His low half-volley from a tight angle was well palmed away by Myhill while moments later Bowyer's curling effort from 20-yards forced the Hull keeper into a fine save with the ball destined for the top corner.

Teemu Tainio's last-ditch clearance then prevented debutant Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink from tapping the ball home from close range and just before half-time Benitez's fierce 25-yard drive was tipped over the bar by Myhill.

'Enormous win' satisfies McLeish

Just after the break Fahey headed Garry McSheffrey's cross past the post from 12-yards out as Birmingham went in search of the opener while at the other end Geovanni's low drive from the edge of the area was well held by Hart.

Chances continued to come and go with Stuart Parnaby's drive from a tight angle stopped by Myhill.

The Hull keeper then pulled off a superb point-blank save from Bowyer's half-volley as Roger Johnson headed the ball into his path.

Birmingham continued to look dangerous on the break and Benitez's fine run saw him one on one with Myhill but from a tight angle the Hull keeper tipped the ball around the post.

From the resulting corner O'Connor headed Fahey's inswinging corner into the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.

Birmingham's goal sparked Hull into life and Geovanni fired wide from close range having found himself unmarked in the box.

And it looked as if an equaliser had come in the dying minutes but Olofinjana's close-range header from Ibrahima Sonko's flick-on bounced back off the bar and his follow up was headed off the line and cleared to safety.

It was Hull last real chance as Birmingham held on to claim their second win of the season.

Hull manager Phil Brown:
"It was a difficult day.

"We gave possession away too cheaply and hey worked our keeper more then we did theirs.

"We've given someone a free header and that's not to my liking.

"We hit the crossbar late on and they rode their luck at times. There was glimpses of some decent football from us but we've lost the game on a set-piece."

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish:
"It's an enormous win. We know that away points are precious in this league.

"You aim to win your home games and those points keep you in the league and away points help you climb the table.

"I think it was a well deserved victory. We had plenty of chances and looked dangerous when we went forward.

"This does wonders for our confidence levels. They stood up to the plate and I thought the performance level was excellent."
