Injuries hit NZ Four Nations bid

World champions New Zealand will be without eight key players for the inaugural Four Nations tournament.

Coach Stephen Kearney will announce his 23-man squad on 5 October but will be without the likes of Roy Asotasi, Manu Vatuvei, Jerome Ropati and Sika Manu.

Zeb Taia, Taniela Tuiaki, Sam Rapira and Simon Mannering are also ruled out.

Leeds full-back Brent Webb, Wigan half-back or hooker Thomas Leuluai and Warrington back rower Louis Anderson all remain in contention.

"While it's obviously disappointing when players are unavailable, it's also a reality when you're dealing with a competition that's as tough as the NRL," said Kearney.

"We lost a lot of players who were in contention for the World Cup last year but we still had a very committed group of players who were desperate to represent New Zealand and had a real belief. It's exactly the same now."

New Zealand will assemble in Auckland early next month to prepare for a one-off Test against Tonga in Rotorua on 14 October.

They will then fly out to London three days later for their opening Four Nations clash and World Cup final repeat against Australia at the Twickenham Stoop on 24 October.

New Zealand lifted the World Cup with a 34-20 victory over the Kangaroos in last year's final in Brisbane.
