Jankovic finished the 2008 season as the world number one
|
Seventh seed Jelena Jankovic advanced to the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open when Russia's Elena Vesnina retired with a thigh strain.
Jankovic, the highest-ranked survivor, was cruising 6-1 3-0 when Vesnina opted to withdraw from the match in Tokyo.
Jankovic next plays 14th seed Marion Bartoli after the Frenchwoman beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 4-6 6-2 7-5.
Maria Sharapova also progressed to the last eight with a 2-6 6-2 6-2 win over fellow Russian Alisa Kleybanova.
Sharapova, unseeded but back up to 25 in the world as she makes her way back from a 10-month injury lay-off, recovered from a shaky opening set to race into a 5-0 lead in the second.
After Kleybanova broke back in the sixth game and held, Sharapova served out the set and broke her opponent three more times in the decider.
"She started off really strong," said Sharapova, who won in Tokyo in 2005. "I was too slow in the beginning. Nobody had much of a warm-up today, we kind of had to warm up in the first few games and she did a much better job of that than me."

With Jankovic and eighth seed Victoria Azarenka the only top-10 ranked players left in the event, Sharapova is well placed for a shot at her first title since April 2008.
Current number one Dinara Safina, second seed Venus Williams and French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova all lost their opening matches on Monday after first-round byes.
"Some of the other girls not in the top 10 have played really well here," Sharapova added. "You've got to expect that from every player you play and focus on the task at hand."
