Federer 6-3 2-0 Del Potro *
Big serving and a whole array of options behind it mean Federer is making Del Potro look one-dimensional at the moment. The Swiss throws in a double-fault but he's already 40-0 in front, and takes game with some sublime stuff at the net that includes a wonderful half-volley pick-up.

Argentina
* Federer 6-3 1-0 Del Potro
Del Potro needs a good start to this set - he doesn't get it. At 0-30 he double-faults and hands Federer three break points.. and another double-fault ends the game. There is a groan around the stadium as 23,000 people start to wonder if they could have made a late dinner reservation.

FIRST SET:

Switzerland
Federer 6-3 Del Potro *
A double-fault on the first point suggests Federer might be a bit nervous. That would be incorrect. Moments later he's firing an ace out wide to seal the first set.

BBC Radio 5 Live
2158: "That was beef from Del Potro, everything was flexed there, even his ear muscles," says Jeff Tarango on 5 live sports extra.

* Federer 5-3 Del Potro
Del Potro opens with an error and Federer, as cool as you like, feathers over a delicate drop volley for 0-30. Del Potro swings a forehand long and wide for 0-40 and three set points... DelPo saves the first with an ace, the second with a move to the net and a smash, and then repeats the trick on the third. A forehand winner and ace give him the game and after making a pretty nervous start to the match, that was impressive.

Twitter
5 live's Steve Rudge tweeting from Flushing Meadows: "Bruce Willis is here to watch the Fed. Lucky for us and the 23,000 people inside Ashe, he's not in his Die Hard vest!"

Federer 5-2 Del Potro *
Federer is in trouble for the first time after a double-fault and a wayward backhand see him 0-30 down but Del Potro smashes a forehand into the net, and the world number one comes through to hold with a fabulous hooked forehand.
* denotes next to serve

* Federer 4-2 Del Potro
Some decent serving gets Del Potro to 30-15 but he then plays a very strange rally, getting away with a poor lob when Federer pokes it back at him, only to send up an even worse lob. A shout from the crowd then puts off the Argentine and he double-faults for 30-40 and break point... but Federer goes for too much with a forehand and it's deuce. Two aces give Del Potro the game and a bit of a boost.
* denotes next to serve

2143: "Fed to destroy delboy, prove that my generation's champion is the greatest ever! Let's go roger!"

Hawkeye
Federer 4-1 Del Potro *
Federer brings Del Potro into the net and whips a heavy topspin backhand past the big man, before following up with a deadly drop shot for 30-0. Cruel really. The perfection comes to an end with a double-fault that sees Federer pegged back to 30-30, but two big serves look to have given him the game. Del Potro belatedly challenges his return and Hawkeye says it did indeed land on the baseline. Federer takes the game anyway with another move to the net and solid smash.
* denotes next to serve

* Federer 3-1 Del Potro
Del Potro stops the rot with a solid service game that opens with an ace and ends with a Federer return that goes long.
* denotes next to serve

Twitter
Skellionz on Twitter: "Federer to win in four, I somehow doubt we will see a Serena style outburst from him today nobody is calmer under pressure"

Federer 3-0 Del Potro *
Federer holds in the blink of an eye and he has started brilliantly. Del Potro looks flat-footed in comparison, although they're probably about size 15 so it's understandable.
* denotes next to serve

Twitter
ramos9 on Twitter: "Did federer forget his PE kit? looks like he is playing in his school shoes..."

Switzerland
* Federer 2-0 Del Potro
Federer opens with a fizzing forehand followed by a dart to the net and a sharp backhand volley, and he's back there two points later to ease away a forehand volley for 15-30. The Swiss steps in and swats away a crosscourt-forehand return for 30-40 and break point... but Del Potro finally wakes up and hammers a forehand into the corner as he moves forward and it's deuce. Federer then hammers a cross-court forehand which sets up the easy smash and it's break point two... but Del Potro does well to stick away a forehand after Fed tempts him with a succession of gentle slices. Federer earns a third break point.... and DelPo manages a big serve and heavy forehand to save again. The Argentine is forced wide and cannot control forehand, so it's break point four... but a big serve brings us back to deuce. No rest for JMDP as he frames a forehand for a fifth break point.... and Federer comes up with the kind of magic that saw off Djokovic as he scrambles brilliantly before rolling a cross-court forehand past the Argentine at the net. Great stuff, and Roger's dad looks especially chuffed.

2118: No pressure then. Federer to serve...

Twitter
soph_tennis on Twitter: "So excited!! And no coverage whatsoever to speak of, apart from the live text updates on BBC website. Dont let me down!!"

Twitter
Kim Clijsters on Twitter: "Finished with media now - I wanna sleep so bad and I'm amazed I still have a voice. Packing up now about to leave hotel to head back to NJ."

The sun is out
2116: The two men are knocking up in bright late-afternoon sunshine and my first prediction of the day proves to be incorrect - Federer has gone for the black t-shirt and not the red. Del Potro still in all black with the yellow bandana. Big cheers for both men.

Twitter
2111: If you've been holding back with your wisdom for the last two weeks, now is the time to pass it on with a text to 81111 or a message to Twitter.

2109: A quick word with the players in the tunnel and it's not exactly fighting talk from DelPo: "I have to do everything perfect today, it will be tough." Federer says: "He's dangerous, he's got nothing to lose".

USA
2106: A man with long hair is singing God Bless America while the troops unveil a large flag, just to keep you up to date. Oh, and we have a fly-past too.

Twitter
Serena Williams on Twitter: "I want to sincerely apologize FIRST to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, USTA & mostly tennis fans everywhere. Thank you all for your support!"

2102: I generally like to steer clear of them but, as it's the final, a few facts: Federer leads their head-to-head 6-0; he's going for his 16th Grand Slam title and sixth straight US win, Del Potro is in his first Grand Slam final; Federer has won 61 career titles, Del Potro has won six; Federer is 28 years old, Del Potro is 20.

Twitter
5 live's Steve Rudge tweeting from Flushing Meadows: "Even the mad cab driver was talking about Serena's outburst. Final day - one match. Can Fed make it 6 in a row? 5live Sports Extra 9pm.."

2100: You know that tomorrow this will all be over, don't you? I'm going to have to be reintroduced to society very carefully after enjoying 15 days and nights of nerves, tension, crying, screaming, smashing things and occasionally swearing. And that was just Serena. Hopefully we're about to round things off in style with a classic men's final between Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro.
