Healy upbeat for crunch game

Northern Ireland forward David Healy may have Michael Owen to thank if he scores the winner in the World Cup qualifier against Poland on Saturday.

Healy's fitness has been questioned after failing to make the Sunderland team but he points to the doubts raised over Manchester United striker Owen.

"People have written off Owen but he keeps bouncing back, getting moves and scoring goals," said Healy.

"You learn from these players and I hope I can bounce back."

Healy, who has scored a record 35 goals for Northern Ireland, has failed to find the net in his last six international games.

The former Leeds United and Fulham player is expected to spearhead Northern Ireland's attack in Chorzow.

Healy goes into the game boosted by the support he has received from manager Nigel Worthington.

"Nigel has always backed me 100 per cent which is good - he wants to see me play and score goals," he added.

"People say I'm lacking match fitness and lacking match sharpness but I don't see that as an excuse.

"I'm still the same player and I hopefully capable of scoring for Northern Ireland.

"Sometimes when I've been playing at club level I have not performed well for Northern Ireland and when I've not been playing for my club I've popped up with some goals.

"When I scored 13 goals in the European Championship qualifiers I wasn't always playing every week at club level."
