Saracens angry at fans reaction

Saracens battled hard for Sunday's victory at Vicarage Road

Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths has criticised fans who booed during Sunday's win over Gloucester.

Supporters jeered and slow handclapped during a lengthy passage of second-half kicking at Vicarage Road, a reaction Griffiths described as "astonishing".

The victory put Saracens one point clear at the top of the league table.

"At a time when the team were straining every muscle to seize the victory, the players surely deserved unequivocal support," he told the club website.

Saracens, under new rugby director Brendan Venter and with a revamped playing squad, have made a fine start to the new season - winning all of their opening four matches.

Sunday's booing came during a spell of aerial ping-pong with Saracens trailing by two points and the home side responded to the catcalls by scoring a decisive try through replacement hooker Schalk Brits.

But the incident has upset the club's hierarchy and chief executive Griffiths believes the players deserve more support from the Vicarage Road faithful.

"We are not dibbling and dabbling this season," he added.

"This squad of players, coaches, medical and support staff has come from all corners of the globe and assembled in north London with the clear aim of winning the Premiership, nothing more and nothing less.

"They have made an extraordinary start.

This is what we aspire to be - a winning club, nothing more and nothing less. Let's be positive, not negative

"Against this background, it was astonishing to hear a vocal minority of the Vicarage Road crowd booing the team during the second half against Gloucester.

"Of course, we can all talk about game plans and we can debate tactics. Make no mistake, everybody is entitled to their opinion.

"However, let's be clear - we want to turn the tide and build a winning culture at Saracens.

"This is a mighty challenge, but it is a challenge we can certainly meet if, as a united club, as players, coaches, staff and supporters, we can stand together and back each other, in good times and in tough times, together.

"When was the last time the Leicester Tigers were booed by any section of the crowd at Welford Road? Ever? When was the last time Manchester United were booed by even a small section of the crowd at Old Trafford? Ever? At winning clubs with a winning mentality, the home supporters simply do not boo the players. Ever.

"This is what we aspire to be - a winning club, nothing more and nothing less. Let's be positive, not negative."
