Steelers grind out overtime win

Jeff Reed
Reed slots over the Steelers' game-winning field goal in overtime

Super Bowl champions Pittsburgh needed overtime to beat Tennessee 13-10 in a tense opener to the new NFL season.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger passed to Santonio Holmes to put the home side 7-0 up in the second quarter.

However, 30 seconds later Kerry Collins found Justin Gage to bring the Titans level before Rob Bironas and Jeff Reed traded fourth-quarter field goals.

Reed then added a 33-yard field goal in overtime to win it for the Steelers who lost safety Troy Polamalu to injury.

Polamalu, who held on to a tremendous one-handed interception earlier in the game, was taken out of the game in the second quarter after suffering medial collateral ligament damage in his left knee.

The five-times Pro Bowl defensive player will undergo a scan on the injury but is expected to be out for up to six weeks.

Most of the other teams get their campaigns under way on Sunday.
