Andrew Strauss and Graham Onions helped England to reclaim the Ashes
|
England captain Andrew Strauss and fast bowler Graham Onions have both been nominated for the International Cricket Council cricketer of the year award.
The pair starred in the victorious Ashes-winning side this summer.
Also among the list of 14 nominees are Australia pace bowler Mitchell Johnson, Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan and India skipper Mahendra Dhoni.
England bowlers Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have been shortlisted for the Test player of the year award.
Strauss followed up a superb winter tour of the West Indies by leading from the front against Australia this summer, hitting 161 at Lord's and four further fifties to help England reclaim the famous urn.
Onions made an instant impact on his Test debut in the home series against the Windies earlier this year, taking seven wickets at Lord's.
He played in three of the five Ashes Tests, taking 10 wickets in total and memorably two in two balls at Edgbaston.
"This will be the sixth time the awards have been handed out and yet again there are so many great performances to recall," said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
"It is also a chance for followers of our great sport to reflect on some of the great cricketing feats they have witnessed over the past year.

"Selecting the winners will no doubt test our selectors and voting academy."
The awards take into account performances from 13 August 2008 to 24 August this year, with the winner due to be announced in an awards ceremony in Johannesburg on 1 October, during the ICC Champions Trophy.
The Test and one-day international teams of the year will also be selected and an award to the team that has adhered most to the spirit of cricket will also be named.
