Credit card giant Visa will be sponsoring the Great Britain team for the 2012 Olympics in London, the British Olympic Association has said.

The multi-million pound deal sees Visa named as the main sponsor for the Olympic and Paralympic athletes who will make up Team 2012.

The money will be used to help athletes train in the run up to the games.

With 1,200 competitors, this is the largest national team to gain sponsorship, the association said.

The deal "will help bring to reality the dreams of future generations of athletes in competing at the highest level," said Lord Coe, chairman of organising committee for the London games.

There had been reports of some initial opposition to the deal from leading athletes over image rights.

The London Olympics organising committee declined to comment.

The Press Association had reported that UK Sport reached an agreement with the athletes after promising that no fewer than four individuals - from a minimum of three sports - would be used in any images to promote Team 2012 or their sponsor.

Team 2012 is a joint project involving the British Olympic Association, UK Sport and the organising committee of the London Olympics.
