Wenger backs Eboue over handball

Manager Arsene Wenger defended Emmanuel Eboue after his deliberate handball against Wigan became the latest controversy to involve Arsenal.

Eboue was booked for an obvious attempt to divert the ball towards goal with his hand during the Gunners' 4-0 win.

"Of course we want to stamp out cheating in the game," Wenger said. "It is not necessarily cheating sometimes, it (handball) can be a reflex as well."

The incident comes in the wake of the diving saga concerning striker Eduardo.

The Croatia international was accused of deliberately going down to win a penalty in a Champions League qualifier against Celtic.

He received a two-match ban from Uefa, which was subsequently overturned on appeal.

Arsenal 'continuity' pleases Wenger

Eboue, meanwhile, has already been in trouble this season - the Ivorian booked for diving at Old Trafford last month.

"When the player goes down sometimes it is not always because he wants to cheat," said Wenger.

"It can be a foul and he makes a bit more of it, but I feel in England that the personality of the player who does it is more important than the importance of the foul and the cheating.

"I mean some players get away with things and others don't."

Eboue was cheered by Arsenal fans when he was substituted against Wigan after an energetic performance in which he defelected Eduardo's shot past keeper Chris Kirkland for the third goal.

Last season he was booed off in the corresponding fixture and Wenger praised the 26-year-old for winning the fans round.

"I believe Eboue did what you have to do in our job, which is to shut up, play and let everyone else talk while he produces quality performances.

"His is a job for strong people, and you can respond mentally. The supporters are behind him again as he plays well and he plays with the right spirit."
