Germany's Martin Kaymer grabbed a share of the lead at the Castello Masters, adding a 67 to his first-round 63.
Returning after nine weeks out with broken toes suffered in a go-kart accident, Kaymer joined Australia's Robert Allenby (66) on 12 under.
The pair are one ahead of tournament host Sergio Garcia, who still has three second-round holes to play on Saturday.
Jose Maria Olazabal is 10 under after 14, while Ryder Cup skipper Colin Montgomerie is six under after 14.
Fifty players are yet to complete their rounds, after high winds disrupted play on Thursday, and Kaymer was forced to complete 25 holes on Friday.
"The last six or seven holes my foot was really hurting but only when walking," said the 24-year-old, who slipped to third on the European money list during his absence, behind Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy.
"I didn't expect to play as well as I have done because all parts of your game suffer when you don't play. But I want my top place back."
World number 10 Garcia, who is still looking for his first win of the year, insisted he was happy with his game heading into the weekend.
"I'm in a great position and having not made any bogeys yet is a real positive," said the Spaniard.
"I could be a couple of shots better but overall I'm pleased to be where I am without playing all that well today."
