Sport Forward: London 'may stage four NFL games'

Alistair Kirkwood says London is the most likely venue for extra games

The boss of NFL UK has said he aims to stage four American Football games a season in London by 2012.

At the moment one game from the American league is staged each year at Wembley Stadium, west London.

But Alistair Kirkwood told the BBC they hope to stage two games in the city next year and, if successful, double that number by 2012.

Mr Kirkwood said: "We are talking to different teams to see who would be willing to do it."

Maximum capacity

He added: "We would like a game at the end of September and another at the end of October.

"If we go to two games the next step would be to go to four games per year. I would like to do that after the 2012 Olympics."

The two NFL games previously staged in London were at maximum capacity, while tickets for the game on 25 October sold even faster.

Mr Kirkwood continued: "This time we have the New England Patriots coming - the most successful team in the last decade.

"We stand a really good chance of moving to two games if this works out well.

"I like the idea of 85,000 people in the stadium - and that makes Wembley a favourite," he added.
