Thomas won the individual pursuit title at last week's national championships

Geraint Thomas was in stunning form on the opening day of the Track World Cup after setting the second fastest individual pursuit time in history.

The 23-year-old Welshman clocked four minutes 15.015 seconds in qualifying with the best time for the 4km pursuit.

It is the quickest ride since Chris Boardman's world record in August 1996.

Four-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy made the second round of the keirin at the Manchester Velodrome with a comfortable win in the third heat.

The 33-year-old from Edinburgh, who is also racing in the sprint and team sprint, is making his international return following a hip injury sustained in a crash in Copenhagen in February.

He is aiming to qualify for next March's World Championships with medals in all three events.

Behind Hoy was China's Tang Qi and Great Britain's Jason Kenny in third who faces a repechage to reach Friday evening's second round.
