Wigan suffer Figueroa injury blow

Maynor Figueroa
Figueroa came off after 28 minutes on Saturday

Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa is facing several weeks on the sidelines after damaging knee ligaments during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Saturday.

Latics manager Roberto Martinez confirmed the 26-year-old's injury but hopes he will be missing for weeks rather than months as was first feared.

"Maynor has a grade two medial ligament problem in his left knee," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

"We will assess it further to see how bad he is, but it doesn't look good."

Martinez added: "Normally with this sort of injury, you are talking about weeks rather than months - but the signs are not nice."

Figueroa suffered the injury early on in Saturday's game and was replaced after 28 minutes by Jordi Gomez and Martinez revealed the Honduran wanted to continue playing.

Figueroa has been an ever present for Wigan this season playing in all 10 league games so his absence will be a huge loss to Martinez.

"He actually wanted to carry on, but the injury was serious and he couldn't do so," said Martinez.

"It's not an injury that he would have damaged any further as it was just a tear - it's muscle problems that can get worse - but Maynor felt so uncomfortable that he had to come off."
