Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is set to undergo wrist and pelvic surgery on Friday following his motorbike accident in east London on Thursday.

The 36-year-old Italian was admitted to hospital after fracturing both his wrists and injuring his pelvis in a collision with a car in Walthamstow.

Cudicini has been transferred to a private hospital for the surgery.

"We have leading specialists looking after Carlo," said Tottenham's head of medical services Wayne Diesel.

"Once surgery is complete and his recovery is under way, we will have a clearer idea of how many weeks he will be out for."

Police had described his injuries as "potentially life-changing" but Tottenham's statement on their website seems to indicate otherwise.

Manager Harry Redknapp added: "We are all sorry to hear about what has happened to Carlo. We are just relieved that the injuries that he sustained in the accident weren't more serious.

"Everyone at the club sends their best wishes and we hope that he recovers soon."

Cudicini was signed by manager Redknapp on a free transfer from Chelsea in January 2009 and has made eight appearances standing in for the injured Heurelho Gomes this season.

He spent almost 10 years at Chelsea, making more than 200 appearances after signing for the west London club from Italian side Castel di Sangro, following brief spells at AC Milan and Lazio.

His father Fabio was AC Milan's goalkeeper in the 1960s.
