2009 men's Champions Trophy
Venue: Melbourne, Australia Dates: 28 November to 6 December
Coverage: Highlights and match reports on the BBC Sport website
England lost 3-2 to world and Olympic champions Germany in their opening Champions Trophy match in Melbourne.
Germany's Christoph Menke opened the scoring, only to see his goal cancelled out by England's James Tindall.
Jan-Marco Montag converted Germany's third penalty corner after half-time, but England equalised through an Ashley Jasckon penalty stroke.
However, Germany captain Maximillian Muller converted the winning penalty corner after sustained pressure.
England manager Peter Nicholson, whose side beat the Germans to be crowned European champions in August, was disappointed not to have started the six-team tournament with a draw.
He said: "Coming here our focus was very much on the World Cup next February and while we obviously wanted something from the game it's as much about developing for the future.
"We introduced a couple of new faces in Nick Catlin and David Condon but ultimately we're disappointed not to have taken a point."
In other games on Saturday, defending champions Australia defeated South Korea 4-0, while the Netherlands saw off Spain 3-2.
England will look to bounce back when they take on Spain on Sunday.
They will then face Australia on Tuesday, the Netherlands on Thursday and Korea on Saturday, with the play-offs taking place on Sunday.
